With a hardness of 8.5, Chrysoberyl is one of the large classic gemstone families, which includes cat's eye and alexandrite, among others. The latter is a color-changing version of chrysoberyl. In the beginning, only (in daylight) blue alexandrites were known, but today chrsoberyl, which is yellowish, brownish, and greenish in daylight, from sources in India and Sri Lanka, also arrives on the gem markets. Their color change is also different. The color change of the classic blue alexandrite is red or purple, while the new, other colors have a slightly lighter color change of pink or orange. This 1.14 Ct emerald-cut specimen from a Sri Lankan source shines in a yellowish-green tone in daylight, while in the warm evening light it shines in an orange tone. Due to its hardness, it is a particularly good choice as the central stone of rings.
