Two of the most important deposits of classic green and orange-green kornerupine are Sri Lanka and Madagascar. This really hard, rare gem that is excellent for setting into jewelry is special because it has an amazingly large pleochroism (trichroism), i.e. multicolority. In practice, this means that when the stone is rotated, it appears a different color from every direction. It is dark, olive-green from one direction, orange from the other direction, and greenish-yellow from the third direction. In nature, andalusite can do something similar, but there are not many examples of it over 1 Ct anymore, or they are very expensive. Its popularity is also due to this multi-color feature. Many people do not know this brilliantly interesting gem at all.
