Spinel is undeservedly the least known of the classic gemstones, even though it is an excellent jewelry stone due to its extreme hardness. It is known in quite a lot of color variations and even occurs in transparent black (very dark gray), which is unique among gemstones. Its main deposits are Burma, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Tajikistan. Its red version was initially mistaken for a ruby. (The ruby of the so-called Black Prince seen in the British crown is actually a ruby-red spinel.) The special feature of this nice size 2.00 Ct, oval cut, beautiful pastel pink specimen from Tanzania is that it produces a slight color change effect in cold and warm light.
