Spinel is undeservedly the least known of the classic gemstones, even though it is an excellent jewelry stone due to its extreme hardness. It is known in quite a lot of color variations and even occurs in transparent black (very dark gray), which is unique among gemstones. Its main deposits are Burma, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Tajikistan. Its red version was initially mistaken for a ruby. (The ruby of the so-called Black Prince seen in the British crown is actually a ruby-red spinel.) This particularly large 2.05 Ct, oval cut, exquisite blue piece was found in Sri Lanka. The blue spinels are the rarest examples of the family. They are also highly valued by collectors, but due to their hardness, they are excellent jewelry stones.
